What might have happened is it could have some bad sectors on the disk to either fail or go bad.

If its primary master then its your internal harddisk. I would go with coldies prognosis, the drive's self-test has probably picked up an warning during startup and is giving you pre-warning of a possible failure. If possible I would send it back and get a replacement, if you can't I would think about switching it for you external. I used a damaged hardisk as extrnal storage for years which had loads of bad sectors and didn't loss a thing, but if Windows writes to a bad sector, then its possible bye bye Windows.

I will say that when i started my defrag i had to stop it as was playin a praccy for mohaa, but when i went to bed i left it to defrag took a while to defrag a 80gig hdd tho. as for using my external hdd i cant as it has about 150gig of stuff and i cant loose that, i do have a 40gig western but thats dodgy as it hums like a bee lol.

To quote, Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) is an interface between a computer's start-up program
or BIOS (basic input/output system) and the computer hard disk. It is a feature of the Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics (EIDE) technology that controls access to the hard drive. If S.M.A.R.T is enabled when a computer is set up, the BIOS can receive analytical information from the hard drive and determine whether to send the user a warning message about possible future failure of the hard drive.
So if your computer Displays a message, during booting up >> (master hard disk: S.M.A.R.T status bad) <<, then there maybe something wrong with that specific drive or the S.M.A.R.T circuit it's self. It would be a good option to run scandisk and re-run defragment and try a program such as norton diskdoctor and see what heppens before condeming the drive, (also try it on another machine if you can)..

Wolfie
Go into the bios and turn off S.M.A.R.T, this has all the functionality of ‘Turning the radio up when you here the big ends knocking’ also called ‘Marauder going to Scotland syndrome’ You wont get anymore-reported errors and chances are that you will not see any problems till the next time you format C, at which point you will be able to send it back on a RMA knowing that it will be replaced.
As for the data, you have way too much porn on your drive! Burn it to disk and copy Marauder in on it so he can expand his collection LOL
