View Full Version : Dead Shuttle

Sup peeps,

OK, Jo was playin a game on her shuttle the other day, and from time to time it would just grind to a halt and everything would run dead slow. The CPU time was maxed out totally. Then, after a couple of minutes in windows, it'd level out again and go back to normal.

There is 512Mb of Geil pc2700 memory in the thing (which only reads as 480Mb in windows), which I figured may be faulty (disk paging etc) so I took it out and tried another stick of memory in there. It booted ok with the new memory, so I went into the Bios to check out the fsb speed. It was sitting at 133 (for an athlon 2600) so I changed it up to 166 like mine. Anyway, I figured out just after I confirmed the changes that my PC can handle the faster speed.

After the reboot, the shuttle didn't come back on. So I tried two different sets of memory but it just doesn't work! Have tried disconnecting the CD Rom, different DDR slots and tried clearing the bios by jumper and battery removal, and nothing will get it to switch on. It doesn't even get to the post test and the monitor doesn't even switch on!

Any ideas folks??

You havent knocked the power jumper of the motherboard have you?

Apart from that it may be the PSU kicking the bucket.

Also when playing around with it I would recomend that you remove anything thats non essential to making it post, So remove the CD Rom's HDD's etc, and any PCI cards.

Maybe the switching on problem could be low power levels on the battery on the mobo? One of the computers had a flat battery on the motherboard and it was murder just getting the thing to switch on.

light on the mother board on? if that is check memory ! cpu! power supply! the three basic thing to stopping it get to power up are those! you already said memory was naff! make sure its seated properly m8!

Unfortunately been through all this already. Actually stripped it completely down and checked all cabling to the mobo. The machine powers on, but no POST tests, no bleeps, no red lights on the motherboard (if indeed there are any!) and nothing doing, even with bare minimum on the board.

Also took the CPU out and tried it in my shuttle, and it's working OK. So is the memory, harddisk, CDRom and floppy (all tested in my shuttle).

So that leaves just the mobo / power supply - although power is getting to the mobo cos a green led comes on, and through to the HD/CDRom cos you can hear them spin up.

But nada. I'm puttin money on either memory controller or graphics chipset. At any rate, i've stripped it again and boxed it up. It's only 8 months old, so gonna send it back and get another one.

Nex: I hope you're definately gonna bring your own PC now m8, cos this one will be needed by Maverick now!

Could be the bios could be sommat fried on the mobo.

Could be psu.

Could be voltage inconsistence.

Is it AMD?

Coz if it is then i shall say no more :)

except !WHY!

Check to see if you have both 5v and 12v from the power supply, failing that it looks like the motherboard is up the ****ter

Sometimes something really simple works...

BIOS Chips heat- they expand and they can partially pop..

Make sure you discharge static by touching a radiator (or even the case of the PC providing the mains plug is switched off (still gets Earth))...

Then try pressing the BIOS chip down.. firm pressure - nothing exessive- you may hear it 'crack' as the pins become more firmly seated...

Yeah, Coldie doesn't recognise a good chipset when he sees one either. Actually, these days it's better value for an intel chip. Cos if it fails as a gaming processor, you can still use it as a highly advanced bookmark.
