Here's a tool that Goldie posted ages ago. Very handy for setting max refresh rate in most games!

When you load the utility above and run it, it will max out the refresh rate for your monitor and reboot your PC. Now it'll run as fast as possible for that card / monitor combination!
Also, here's instructions for removing the MAX FPS in Call of Duty, and making it run faster...
1. In-game you should open the console and type in this.....
/seta com_maxfps 999
2. Now go to the Call of Duty Options menu, and the Performance submenu. Change "Sync Every Frame" option to No.
That should max out your FPS and make it run fast as it can!
Sweet deal! p.s.... I accept no responsibility for any problems or damage which may occur as a result of these changes!!!

Oh, forgot to mention that if you want to see what your FPS is in-game, type this into the console....
/seta cg_drawfps 1
and to turn it off....
/seta cg_drawfps 0

/seta com_maxfps 999
Should this be used even if you're happy with your hardware?
Yeah, dumb question probably. :)

Yeah no reason why not, some people just use it for interests sake, I use it to just keep tabs on how my card behaves on certain maps, the more open maps can get your fps to swing a little low, but its nifty anyway.

You may get better performance from your hardware, regardless of whether you immediately or not, so it's worthwhile to do it anyway I would say.
It doesn't cause any harm. :)

Thats right, on the open maps my fps drops to around 24, then on the close stuff its well over 100fps, much better than before with these few tweaks. I want an agp 8x board now mind and some faster RAM!

Very nice m8, make sure you get up-to-date drivers from ATI for the card, there were issues with CoD and ATi cards. Not certain if your driver disk will have new or older drivers on.
