Im not sure if anyone has ever had this or hurd of it before but I have a spare IBM hard drive but it's got a strange problem.. It's a 60 gig Vancouver Deskstar drive. ATA 100 8 meg buffer... I have one problem with it.. everytime I run Joint ops from it, at random times (maybe 2 mins sometimes hours).. It makes a Click like noise, beeps then the game crashes the computer (it freeze's and I have to reset).... but I've also had it whilst running other things too but the system stays ok (it does not freeze).. I've never had it with any other drive.. I dont know what could be causing it, but it seems to only happen (I think) when using certain programs.. any IDEAS????

I think I will write to IBM... cause the drive can work for weeks non stop but certain programs like Joint ops just kill it..??

Any help would be usefull?

PS.. Aida 32 Also reports that the drive name is IBM but it is made by Hitachi. żżżżżżż

hmmm well hitachi now owns the deskstar name - i couldnt find anything on the ibm site (after an admittedly quick peek) but the hitachi site has a drive diagnostic

http://www.hitachigst.com/downloads/dft32_v373_b25.exe <- creates a boot floppy which a drive diagnostic on it for deskstar drives.

other utils are available from http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

but that one looks like a good bet (to determine if the drives fukked that is)

IBM DeskStar (or DeathStar as they have been dubbed) suffered from well know problems which IBM knew about. I think they sold the name off after having so much trouble with the drives, but I think there is a firmware fix for them.

Just google the words "IBM Deathstar".

there is also a downloadable check on the IBM site to see whats wrong with your HD and give's you a report to send it to them and so on and on
and after 5 days you got yourself a new HD

You are refering to the 60 & 75 GXP models. The 120's and 180's are much more relable. (Well mine are at the moment)

I would follow ray's link detailing the Drive Fitness Test, Dont mess about. Get it RMA'd.
